The 2013 MLB baseball season is off to a great start! But nothing quite as momentous as my "Today in History" has happened just yet...

On this day in 1974, Hank Aaron hit is 715th career home run. Now, 715 homers would be impressive already, but the real reason that this was such a big deal is because that put him past Babe Ruth's previous record of 714. Oh, and the fact that he was fighting off death threats and racist hate mail the whole time he worked to achieve this. Aaron was playing for the Atlanta Braves at the time, and this event drew the largest crowd that the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium had ever see (almost 54,000 people!). Hank Aaron finished his career with 755 homers, and he currently has the second most career home runs, behind Barry Bond with 762.
