A seat on Ithaca’s Common Council is up for grabs in a special election this year, as Ithaca’s 4th ward representative Eddie Rooker stepped down before his final term year in order to attend law school.
Ithaca’s 4th ward is mostly Collegetown property, which is an area of particular interest and housing-related need for the council. The democratic candidate is Stephen Smith, who was appointed by the council two months ago to serve in the position until the special election. He is also the finance director for the democratic New York congressional campaign of Nate Shinagawa. His challenger in the election is Republican Misha Checkovich, who is expected to graduate with a degree in history from Cornell in December. If elected, Checkovich would be the Ithaca Common Council’s only Republican.
