A sad day today in New York City, as a 6-year-old boy was fatally hit by a tractor-trailer this morning while walking to school with his older brother.
Later identified by NYPD as Amar Diarrosova, the child crossed First Avenue around 8 a.m. when he was struck by the westbound truck in the crosswalk. After hitting the boy, the driver for McLane Foodservice Distribution drove for another block before pedestrians alerted him. The accident occurred only one block from Public School 155 William Paca, where Amar and his sibling attended.
A nearby gas station owner heard the impact and noticed that the crossing guard he usually saw was not present. Police are examining whether a guard had been patrolling the crosswalk. A P.S. 155 teacher said Amar was a "very bright kid, like one of the top students in his class."
Police did not suspect any foul play but still have launched an investigation.
