Early thawing is creating slippery conditions, police warn.
As spring grows ever closer and the snow mountains around us start to melt, roads and walkways can become slippery to travel on. This past Saturday afternoon, three people while walking along Ithaca Falls fell into the water near the 300 block of Lake Street. Ithaca Police were called to the scene, but the individuals had left by the time they arrived. In the Ithaca Journal, Chief of Police John Barber was quoted saying he "urges visitors to keep clear of any body of water, even if it appears to be frozen. This includes the Cayuga Lake inlet near Stewart Park and the areas encompassing the Cascadilla falls and Ithaca Falls." The police also warn residents that as a result of the recent warm weather, water levels have risen significantly and ice that appears to be thick is often unstable and extremely dangerous. So be especially careful while you're driving or walking on sidewalks that appear wet because they may be icy.
