It's been rough being a New York sports fan lately. Between the Yankees not making the playoffs for the first time in 14 years, the Knicks...well...being the Knicks, and the Jets teasing us with their on-and-off relationship with winning, I haven't found much to cheer about.
The Yankees have not had the presence they used to back during the late-90'. People still know the Yankees as one of the best teams in baseball, but no longer do they seem "unbeatable." And with the Red Sox and Rays doing most of the winning lately, suddenly I feel a lot less hated.
The Knicks have been on the opposite end of the spectrum. They've been the laughing stock of the NBA for years now and finally, under the rule of Mike D'Antoni and Donnie Walsh, it looks like there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately, that light won't come until 2010, so I get to look forward to another year and a half of misery.
The Jets are in a league of their own. They were ranked one of the top 10 worst franchises in NFL history by one ESPN analyst, and almost on cue, they post an 8-3 record three-quarters of the way through the season. But of course, they are the Jets, and so they don't make the playoffs and end up firing their head coach. Now it's back to square one and I'm left wondering how it all turned out so bad.
But I have vowed to stick by my teams, through thick and thin, for better and for worse. I will continue to support my players even if they have admitted to using steroids, and I will continue to root, root, root for the home team even if we have no chance of winning. I will continue to over-pay for tickets to sit in the blistering cold and watch my team lose. And I will do it because I am a fan, and nothing makes me happier.
