I'm a huge college basketball fan, so I should be pumped right now. In the next few days, the sport's four best teams will decide this year's national champion. But quite frankly, I'm less excited about college hoops than I was last week, when I was less excited than I was two weeks ago.
The NCAA Tournament is the one playoff in sports that gets less exciting as the rounds advance. This is because the NCAA Tournament is the one sports playoff with the bracket. Fans may root for their own teams, but we could care less about the zillions of other teams. The bracket makes the tournament fun because it gives us a reason to care about Western Kentucky and Morgan State. The first weekend of the tournament is so captivating because there are so many games that we have a stake in. But once the Final Four comes around, most people's brackets have been shredded, so there's no reason to care anymore, unless you're a UNC, UConn, Michigan State, or Villanova fan.
The bracket is what makes the tournament captivating. After all, these teams are not amazing. The vast majority of the players playing this weekend will never sniff the NBA. The reason to watch is to see if your picks are correct. But if you're a normal person, you've been wrong about too many games at this point for your bracket to be relevant anymore.
Monday will be Major League Baseball's Opening Day. That's a reason to be excited on Monday.
