Volunteer & Student Positions
WVBR is always welcoming new student and community volunteers. Take a look at the information below or contact training@wvbr.com for more information.
Welcome to WVBR! We're a professionally-staffed commercial radio station in Ithaca, New York, broadcasting at 93.5 and 105.5 FM and reaching the seven counties surrounding the Ithaca area. We are also streaming 24/7 right on this website, so we can be heard anywhere all over the world. We are unique in that our business is run completely by Cornell University students, with no university oversight or funding. We run our own business, and our own radio station, and you can get involved and help us rock even more!

Since the Cornell Radio Guild began in the 1930s, we have passed along knowledge and experience in radio broadcasting from generation to generation. We now have state-of-the-art facilities, and operate with a staff of approximately 100 staff members, composed of Cornell students, community volunteers, and paid staff.

If you don't have any prior experience in radio, don't worry! We'll teach you everything you need to know to work at a real radio station! Many WVBR alums have gone on to bigger and better things in the broadcast industry. It's our mission to have all of staff members follow in their footsteps and excel at whichever path they choose, and we look forward to continuing the tradition with you!

  • What departments can you train for at WVBR?
WVBR has many opportunities to get involved - you'll definitely be able to find something you enjoy among our variety of on-air and off-air positions. Here's a sampling of the departments at WVBR...
Programming... The heart and soul of a rock radio station is the on-air DJ staff. You'll control our modern air studio, pumping out 3000 watts of the best modern and classic rock ever made! Not only will you learn how to do a DJ shift live on the air, but you can assist in music selection, playlist creation, and special program planning. Being a rock DJ is without a doubt one of the coolest experiences ever, and you can tell all your friends to tune in to your show every week!
News... WVBR is "the news source for Tompkins County." We produce morning and afternoon newscasts every weekday, keeping our listeners updated on the latest national, regional, and local news stories. We receive the live news updates from The Associated Press, and our "newsies" do the rest! Opportunities for local community reporting are available too - and you can get press credentials for all the important events around town! You can stay up-to-date with current events, and help the rest of Tompkins County do the same! And if you're interested in the pertinent issues around Tompkins County and interviewing prominent people from around the county, ask about our weekly public affairs program, This Sunday.
Sports... Like sports? Got attitude? Perfect! The WVBR Sports team wants you! In addition to daily sports reports, our sports team gets into the real national and local sports action. Want to sit in the press box at a Cornell athletic event? Our sports team does it! Every Sunday night, we feature an hour-long sports talk broadcast called "Sports Roundup," where our roundtable of sports experts talk about and fight over the biggest games of the week. And, every weekday afternoon at 6, you have the chance to participate in the 93-Second Sports Shot... a chance for you to rant about anything in the world of sports! Whether your sports passion is football, baseball, basketball, golf, ice hockey, or auto racing, WVBR Sports wants you!
Promotions... Behind the scenes at WVBR, the Promotions department plans all the awesome events, giveaways, special programs, and remote broadcasts, in addition to handling station publicity. We're always looking for people with brilliant ideas for on-air giveaways and promotion campaigns - the sky's the limit! Put your talents to work with our promotions team to create radio magic! (And yes! Sometimes we get free tickets, food, and/or stuff for our staff members too!)
Production... When an advertiser purchases advertising with us, we need creative and talented people to make their advertising dream a reality. (That's where you come in!) WVBR has a state-of-the-art production facility to produce ad spots for clients, in addition to promotional spots, images, and voice tracks for in-house purposes. Production is extremely easy to learn, and can be a lot of fun! We need lots of ambitious people for the Production department now, and you can be one of them!
Business... As a commercial radio station, WVBR depends on advertising revenue to pay the bills and stay on the air. If you have any experience and/or interest in finance, human resources, or business management, there's no better way to learn even more than hands-on management of our treasury! Business experience not required - we'll teach you everything!
Engineering & Web... Keeping a radio station on the air is hard work, and that's where our engineering department comes in! There's a multitude of opportunities available in engineering, from playing around with old analog parts and equipment to administering our new computer network to assisting with the WVBR web site! If you want to learn how a real radio station works, WVBR is the place to do it!

Again, no experience is required for any of these exciting positions at WVBR! We've been training students in radio for almost seventy years, and continue to grow, develop, and expand! We would love to have you join our team of hard-working, fun-loving student volunteers!
