TopCashback.com survey finds Tim Taylor from is the TV dad most like Americans’ real-life dads

Did you hear the rumor about butter? Well, I’m not going to spread it!


Yes, that’s such a total dad joke and according to a recent Father’s Day gift and spending survey conducted by TopCashback.com, the USA’s most generous cashback website, 58 percent of the Americans polled chose “dad jokes” as their favorite dad-ism. Dad style (26 percent), Dad dance moves (10 percent) and dad bods (six percent) followed as favorites.

The survey polled a cross-section of 1,817 adults, aged 18 and over. With 80 percent planning on celebrating Father’s Day, TopCashback.com wanted to know their purchasing habits for the third Sunday in June. Below, please find some additional insight from the survey:


Americans plan to gift dad:

  • Breakfast, lunch, brunch and/or dinner (36 percent)

  • Clothes/tie (30 percent)

  • Greeting card/acknowledgment he’s doing a good job (24 percent)


What dad really wants on his special day:

  • Spending quality time with my kids (43 percent)

  • Breakfast, lunch, brunch and/or dinner (27 percent)

  • Tools (24 percent)

In addition, TopCashback.com found that participants plan to shop around at different places like department stores (47 percent), Walmart (45 percent) and Target (33 percent) for dad’s gifts. With 37 percent of participants planning to spend $50 or less, another 37 percent plans to spend between $50 and $100. To save money, Americans are incorporating a number of different methods and will be shopping sales and deals (82 percent), shopping via a cashback site (55 percent) and utilizing coupons (46 percent) in order to save on Father’s Day presents.


With gifts in tow, how are Americans planning on celebrating the dads in their lives?

  • BBQing and/or celebrating at home (45 percent)

  • Going out to eat (38 percent)

  • Going on a day trip, road trip or vacation (14 percent)

Every dad is unique, but two out of five (40 percent) Americans chose Tim Taylor from ‘Home Improvement’ as the TV dad who their real-life dad is most like. Other TV dads that were the most relatable included:

  • Homer Simpson from ‘The Simpsons’ (17 percent)

  • George Lopez from ‘The George Lopez Show’ (15 percent)

  • Phil Banks from ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ (14 percent)
