Workshop Highlights New Tenant Laws
Utica, New York: The Utica Municipal Housing Authority AmeriCorps Program will sponsor a workshop to educate renters about tenant rights and responsibilities at 6:00 p.m. Monday, August 19 at the Utica Public Library, 303 Genesee Street, Utica, Second Floor, Gallery. The event, which will focus on the new tenant law in New York State, is free and open to the public. An elevator is available. Parking is behind the Library on the Park Avenue side. Light refreshments will be served. Free transportation can be provided for local residents, but reservations must be made two days before the event.
The speaker for the workshop will be Melanie Goldberg, Esquire of Legal Services of Central New York.
The workshop will highlight recent changes in New York State regarding eviction, renter protections, and landlord/tenant matters. It will provide an overview of tenant and landlord law including leases, repairs, eviction process, fair housing, and lead issues. AmeriCorps members will be available to discuss housing search and assistance resources and programs available for community residents.

The Utica Municipal Housing Authority operates the Housing Opportunity Center which provides free and confidential assistance with finding apartments and emergency housing, qualifying for rental assistance programs, and accessing other community services such as budgeting help, jobs, benefits, financial literacy coaching, and veteran services.
